the history of Imabari (No.6)
As the Muromachi era ends, the Sengoku era begins.
At the start of this new era, Murakami Takeyoshi
became a lord of Karakoyamajo(caslte).
In 1602 Todo Takatora took down Karakoyama caslte and destroyed
almost everything. Then he moved the rubble from the old castle
to help construct a new castle in the same place
we find the Imabari castle today. At that time,
the name of Imaharu changed to Imabari( It means
“from now on, we will rule here”.) Todo Takatora went to Tsu
and Hisamatsu clan began to rule Imabari.
1871 Hanhaichiken (the name of Han was abolished
and it began to be called Ken) Imabari han became Imabari Ken,
Matsuyama Ken, Saijo Ken. Komatsu-Ken became Ishizuchi Ken.
1872 The prefectural office of Ishizuchi Ken was set up in Imabari,
but with the addition of Kamiyamaken,
we see the unification of Shikoku’s kens into Ehime Ken.
Subsequently, the prefectural office was moved to Matsuyama.
1892 Imabari village was born.
1920 Imabari village merged with Hiyoshi village
and Imabari city was born. The name (Imaharu was changed into Imabari.
This idea was adopted at Imabari city council. Now we call our city Imabari.

The history of Imabari (No.5)
When Fujiwara no Sumitomo no ran occurred in 936, the name of Mr. Murakami
appeared as an important advisor to Ochi (Kono).
In 1063, when Minamoto no yoriyoshi became a leader of Iyo,
Murakami seemed to live in Kokufu (ancient provincial office) Sakurai.
His nephew (Murakami no nakamue or chuusou) moved to live in Noshima.
He ruled Setonaikai Inland Sea.
At that time Noshima was only a temporary outpost.
In 1160, when the Heike clan had more power,
the descendant of Murakami no nakamune, Murakami no Kiyonaga
living in Sanuki, moved to Oshima island with his followers
and began to live there.
In 1181, they raised an army at Mt. Takanawa fought against Heishi
with Kono but died on the battlefield. At that time, his son, Murakami Yoritou
was in Kyushu as reinforcement. He came back immediately and
defeated his father’s adversary.
He caught his father’s murders alive and then murdered them cruelty.
We see how the area of Imabari slowly expanded, from the Heian era to
Kamakura era.
Nanbokucho era
Kusunoki masashige is said to also be born from Ochi clan. In 1342,
Wakiya yoshisuke entered Kokufujo (Karakoyamajo) ,
so we know that Imabari is the military base of Chugoku and Shikoku area.

We are going to finish our blog of the history of Imabari next time.

The history of Imabari(No.4)
It has been confirmed that Ochi held power during the Nara era.
Obviously, Imabari appeared in the history when Fujiwara no mototsune
became a leader of this area in 865. At the time the city was known as Jokoku.
Jokoku refers to the second largest of the four societal classes.
It also refers to the way Japan was divided near Miyako
(central part of Japan). At that time, it is said the ancient provincial
capital was located near Tomita elementary school in area that was known
as Kamitoku.

We also recognize other important lords originating from this area.
865 Fujiwara no mototsune (later Kanpaku) Kanpaku means like a present prime minister.
974 Fujiwara no michitaka (later Kanpaku)
986 Fujiwara no kintou

3) Some of Imabari’s older generations believe that Imabari was originally
known as “Nigitatsusakurai”. They say that Nigitatsu was actually
near Sakurai in Imabari city. It was here that Imabari was first established.
This is supported by a number of sources including an old Japanese book named
Manyoshu. In this book, there is a famous poem
(Nigitatsuni Funanorisemuto Tsukimateba Siomokanainu imahakogiidena).
This poem was written by Nukata no Okimi. The book was compiled from
the latter half of the seventh century to the latter half of
the eighth century. If the use of the word Nigitatsu refers to Imabari,
the name of Imabari was already known to most of Japan by this time.

The history of Imabari (No.1)

In the account of his life,
Ochi claims that he was the second son of Iyo no Oji,
the Korei emperor (the seventh emperor – February 19, BC 290 to March 27,
BC 215) (Shinsenseishiroku).
He supposedly lorded over the clan who was responsible for building
the Omishima Oyamazumi Shrine. The clan had been migrant before,
but the construction of the shrine symbolized the establishment of Imabari.
According to a local legend, Ochi was actually the descendant of
the God-Oyamazumi. He was known as Ochi no mikoto and
he came to Shikoku to rule the Setouchi. Still other explanations exist.
Some people believe that Ochi was known as (Nigihayahi no mikoto)
(the vassal of the first emperor Jinmu). Anyway we are not sure
when or how Ochi and his clan appeared in the history. But we are sure
that this clan remained in power for a very long time.

the History of Imabari (No.1)

1) We are not sure exactly when Imabari was established. There are a number of
hypotheses regarding the city’s origins.
663 – The Hakusukienotatakai(war) was waged on the Chosen Peninsula.
{wakoku kudara rengougun×tou shiragi rengougun}was taken as a prisoner
and his name (Ochi no Atai) appeared in the earliest history of
Imabari. His family name was Ochi and he is said to have been born
in the area that is now known as Kokubu in Imabari.
